FAQ

Q: Why is alt.binaries.test the only newsgroup I can post to?

A: The options to add and remove newsgroups are only available when the application has been registered.

Q: Why is the "Import Group List…" command greyed out?

A: The "Import Group List…" command is only available when the application has been registered.

Q: How can I import group lists?

A: YA-AutoPoster will import group list files saved from YA-NewsWatcher 2.4.0 and higher. If you don't know what a group list is, or how to create one, here's what to do:
• Launch NewsWatcher.
• Select "Windows>Show Full Group List" from the menu.
• Select "File>New Group Window" from the menu.
• Drag newsgroups you would like to post to from the "Full Group List" window to the "Untitled" group window you just created.
• When you're done adding newsgroups, bring the Untitled group window to the front and select "File>Save" from the menu.
• Save the group list wherever you want, giving it whatever name you want.
• Now launch YA-AutoPoster if it's not already running.
• Select "File>Import group list" from the menu.
• Navigate to the group list you just created and click "Choose"
• YA-AutoPoster will import all newsgroups contained in that file to YA-AutoPoster's internal newsgroup list. WARNING: Whenever you import a group list, the contents will replace the entire contents of YA-AutoPoster's group list.

Q: Is there any way to change the way the subject line is formatted (i.e. <Subject> (1/1) - <Filename>)?

A: There is no way to change the formatting of the subject line because it is done by YA-NewsWatcher. I've even tried to "modify" YA-NewsWatcher, but came up empty-handed. Many others have also wondered about that and quite a few have suggested making a version of YA-AutoPoster for either Netscape Communicator or Microsoft Outlook Express. At this point I'm leaning towards Outlook Express, however I may decide to make a version of YA-AP for both the browsers.

Q: What is the "Anti-Cancel String" for?

A: Some news servers run filters to cancel "spam" messages. Generally, these filters are looking for multiple messages with the same subject, message body, and signature. They do this by comparing the byte size of each of those fields. Therefore, if you post several messages using the same subject and message body, the 0/# parts will most likely be cancelled. The "Anti-Cancel String" adds a random string of 10 "words", with each "word" containing between 3 and 13 characters, to the beginning of the message body. This is just enough random text to keep the cancel filters from cancelling the 0/# parts.
So, if you don't want the 0/# parts of your posts to show up, then use the same subject and message body on all of your posts without the "Anti-Cancel String". If you want to be sure the 0/# parts of your posts show up (in case they contain important information) then use the "Anti-Cancel String" option.

Q: YA-AutoPoster just sits there during the message creation process. The Status window shows "Creating aliases to files" but nothing is happening. What's going on?

A: Most likely the "YA-AP" scripting addition is missing. You can either reinstall YA-AutoPoster or manually check to make sure that all the files are where they should be. If you are not sure which files go where, read the directions for performing a manual installation.

Q: When I launch YA-AutoPoster, I get an error message saying that the file "YA-AutoPoster.rsrc" could not be found. What does this mean?

A: This file is necessary for YA-AutoPoster to function correctly. This file must be located in the Preferences folder of the System Folder of your startup disk. If it is not there, you can either reinstall YA-AutoPoster or manually check to make sure that all the files are where they should be. If you are not sure which files go where, read the directions for performing a manual installation.

Q: When I try to install YA-AutoPoster I get errors. How can I install YA-AutoPoster?

A: HOW TO MANUALLY INSTALL YA-AUTOPOSTER

• Mount the "YA-AutoPoster" self-mounting disk image.
• Open the disk and scroll down to the bottom of the window. There will be a folder named "Parts". Open the "Parts" folder.
• Copy the Scripting Additions "YA-AP" and "Resource Utilities" to the Scripting Additions Folder on your startup disk.
• Copy the file named "YA-AutoPoster.rsrc" to the Preferences folder of your startup disk.
• Make a new folder where you would like to keep YA-AutoPoster, and its associated files, on your hard drive. I would suggest naming this folder "YA-AutoPoster".
• Copy the rest of the files from the YA-AutoPoster disk image to the folder you just created.
• Restart your Macintosh.

That should be all that is needed to manually install YA-AutoPoster if the "Install YA-AutoPoster" script does not function properly.

Q: Why can't I drag my signature file into the Signature Entry box?

A: The signature entry box only allows plain text files (e.g. SimpleText files) to be dropped in it. The file must be plain text without any styles (e.g. Bold, Italic, Colors, etc.) since YA-NewsWatcher doesn't allow any styled text in any of it's message fields.

Q: Why can't I drag a text file into the "Message Setup" box?

A: For the same reason as above.

Q:
Why is there a folder named "~Aliases" in the trash after YA-AutoPoster runs?

A: When you attach files in YA-NewsWatcher, it embeds an alias resource into the created message file. In order for YA-AutoPoster to insert the alias resource into the message files it creates, it must first create an alias to the file you wish to post, extract the alias resource from the alias file, and then insert it into the message file. YA-AutoPoster does not empty the trash in case there is something in it you do not wish to delete.
